I agree...but I think you might be missing my bigger point though Jeff:
A proper microclimate is more important that the difference of two locations that have ave temps a few degree apart.
I look at it this way: I would rather have a "great microclimate" in the cold spot in Long Island/CC than an unprotected one in coastal NJ.
As far as extreme cold during record events...I'm not sure about the record of -2 at Cape May. Last data I had (and it might have been updated)was the record low at NWS Cape May was -4 in the 1985 cold outbreak:
