In regard to Aloifolia and temps

Message from Jim in Iowa

Try putting a container of water next to your plant
-off the ground-and you will see how often the growth point is actually
dealing with freezing...you will find that some days
(regardless of the temps to some degree, pun intended)
if there is no sun that the ice will not melt and this
will give you an idea of what the plant tissue is going through.

Although plants technically don't give off heat they do move
it around so to speak,so having some quilt batting or a cover
is very useful in that the wind/snow/frost can not contribute
to tissue damage-my Sequoia withstood -18F with a rose cone and
remained perfectly green, one that was uncovered was decimated.
