@ Andras- Cordy-Protection

Nachricht von Wolfgang(Stade)

Hallo Andras,
Are You living in real Zone 7a ?, it may be a little to cold for Cordyline australis.
Is Your Cordy completely dead?, no recovering at the upper part of the stem or from the rootstock?
Did You mulch the Cordy and what was the min-temps. last winter at your location?

My location is near Hamburg, Zone 7 b/ 8a.
The absolut minimum the last 10 years was -19° C.
In normal winters the min. is at -12°C sometimes to -15° C.
Last winter was the first winter in the ground for my Cordyline australis.
The winter started mild until the end of February/early March it becomes cold for nearly two weeks.
We had some nights at -12/13° and one at -16° C

When it becomes freezing weather I mulched the Cordy and when the temps drops below - 8°C I covered the Cordy with a real bastmat. including additional mulching.

My was cordy was nearly undamaged, only the leaftips out of the bastmat were burned by freeze.

Heavy mulching ist important at freezing weather.
If the Cordy dies complete above ground she sure will revover from the rootstock.

Her is the pic with the protection

However, this was the first winter for my Cordy. The next winters will tell the truth, if I had only luck with my cordy last winter or it is one of the harder forms .

Viele Grüße
Wolfgang
