Re: Phoenix canariensis letzte Woche im Schnee

Nachricht von Thomas, Norway

Yes, it is outstanding to live in a zone 9A in Norway. I do live in Ålesund, and not on the southwestern coast. The southwestern coast is mild, but not the mildest. The Ålesund-area has the highest winter temperatures in Scandiania because of many factors, but probably most because of the dominating winds from southwest. In southwestern Norway a more eastern wind-direction is dominating in the winter which brings cold air. THe average january winter temp. in Stavanger is 1,5 celsius.

For the moment I have only a Chamaerops humilis in my garden, but I have bough a Trachycarpus fortunei, three Phoenix canariensis and a Musa basjoo that I will plant out spring 2005. Neighbors have Trachycarpus fortunei in their garden without winter protection.

The mild climate allows us to grow rather exotic plants like Kiwi and grapes. In Ålesund there are several speciments of Aruacaria araucana that reaches 10 metres! The oldest is 99 years. My only complaint about the climate is the rather cold summers. The warmest month this summer was August with 15,8 degrees celsius.
