Re: Phoenix canariensis letzte Woche im Schnee

Nachricht von Robert Z7b

Hi Thomas!
The Phoenix was planted out last year in spring, so it had to endure just one winter outside.
It was protected by means of a styrofoam box with a heating cable inside set to activate at -2/-3°C. The lowest temperature it survived was -10°C (still in pot at that time) with defolitation. -7°C and snow it took without leave damage.
I'm living in eastern Austria. Snow in November here is nothing unusual although mostly shortlived. We didn't have frost yet, the minimum being +1°C so far. But the snowfall was so heavy last week in the morning, that it remained on the ground despite +1°C air temperature. It warmed up considerably afterwards, on Friday we've had +15°C. Then it turned cooler again. Last night +3°C, day: +7°C, very windy.
Where do you live?
Snow in November is nothing unusual in middle Europe, even in mild areas, but of course it does not happen every year. We've had also some years without any snow. Hard frosts in November are uncommon.
Do you live further south or west?

Regards,
Robert
