Re: Phoenix canariensis letzte Woche im Schnee

Hi Thomas!
Outstanding, a zone 9a in Norway!
That means you live in the extreme (south)-west of Norway do you?
Which palms do you grow in your garden? Do you protect Trachycarpus there against the rain? (I suppose you have lost of it, don't you?).
I run across a palm page from Norway several times. I think it was a webpage about a palm-isle.
Great that you have such a mild climate so far north.
Can you send us some palm photos from your garden in Norway? Would be great to see.

Our climate here is quite extreme in comparsion.
In January you can find temperatures of +24°C as well as -22°C or even less in centruy winters like 1929. Although both extremes occur rarely a sunny spring-like winter is as likely here as a bitterly cold winter with weeks of snowcover.
But mostly it's quite normal in between with a monthly average slightly above 0°C (+0,2°C) and an absolute min around -12/-13°C during one or two nights a year.
Our climate is rather dry (approx. 450 - 500 mm / year) and summers are hot. Mean annual temp 1961-1990: 10,6°C with a trend to warmer temperatures especially during the last two decades.

Best wishes,
Robert
