East has been warm for other reasons too.

That is true to some degree...a trough in the West normally means a ridge downstream in the central eastern USA.
However, blocking (NAO) in winter is often important to the far eastern USA. One of the reasons the East Coast states often have milder winters than points west to the Rockies is the storm track moves lows from the Colorado area, through the Great Lakes, and into southern Quebec. This keeps the cold air to the west of the low, and pulls up mild air from the tropical/subtropical Atlantic into the Gulf and south Atlantic States.
If there were not the case...and the winter monsoon was stronger in the far eastern USA/East Coast....then winters would be MUCH drier, and colder like East Asia.
