Late 70's were cold (realtive to normal)

Message from Mike coastal CT

Not sure I'm getting what your trying to say Dennis?

The SST temp map you posted shows SST relative to normal in the data record (1948 - 2015).

If your asking if the removed the time from the late 70's and all of the 1980's...would SST look less warm right now (meaning they took away a warm section of the long term data?)

Well, first, the late 1970's were colder than normal in terms of Atlantic SST, so there map would actually show MORE red. The 1980's had close to normal SST each year with the exception of 1980, 1988, and 1989. So I don't think that removing the 1980's would impact long term SST all that much (again, if this is the question your asking).
