Different climates/Different Trachies
Nachricht von Axel/Amsterdam/Holland
Hello everybody,
i apologise for having to write in English but i can´t write in German.
I would like to have your opinion on the differences in trachycarpus fortunei in different climates.
In general trachies in Mediterranean climates have thin trunks and short petioles. My idea is that this has to do with the dry heat.
Trachies in the UK in general have fatter trunks and longer petioles. My idea is that it has to do with humidity and cool cloudy summers.
What about Lago Maggiore?
In general the trachies near the Lago Maggiore have thinner trunks but longer petioles than in the Mediterranean. They usually have exceptionally full crowns too. The lower leaves usually starts to hang down and forms a skirt (almost like washingtina).
Is that the combination heat and humidity? (occasional heavy summerrainfall). Or are there other factors like acidity of the soil? Or is it just the fact that the trachies usually are much older near the Lago and they change appearance when they become older?
I love to hear your opinions.
greetings,
Axel
