Hallo Axel,

soil and climate are definately factors, but they do not explain why Trachys with thin and fatter trunk exist at the same time in places in the Mediterranean. For examples the older Trachys in Madrid have very thin trunks whilst the younger ones have fat trunks. I think this has more to do with the variations within Trachycarpus fortunei. The climate plays a minor part in my opinion.
