Yes an interesting experience it would be.....I can't image living in those harsh conditions as a miner there. Did you see the old school house, I bet it would have been an adventurous place to be as a child. There seems to be an underground water source in this little ghost town, the shrubs and other plant life makes me believe this. And palms do need some water to survive, so there must be a little bit. You know, it gets cold in the winter in that part of the Mojave.....temps often falling down to 25F at night, but the Washingtonias don't seem to mind. Not many phoenix in this part of the desert, due to the cold but I did see several in Barstow CA.
A couple Saguaro growing in Barstow near the Calico ghost town, but these are not native to this part of the southwestern desert. Do you think the roof will come off eventually?
