red berries from "california holly"

Message from George in Bandon Oregon

the evergreen shrubs with the pretty red berries in Stan's nice pictures are from heteromeles arbutifolia aka "California holly" and "Christmas berry". it's presence in a certain suburb of L.A. popular with stars of the silver screen gave that area the name "Hollywood"!!!

it's a member of the rose family closely related to the more familiar Asian genus photinia (and was once included in that genus) and it's native range is from extreme inland s.w. Oregon (a few in Josephine county just north of the state lines at 42 north latitude) to Baja California. a distinctive plant at this time of year for sure and a handsome shrub or small tree at any time.

there is also a golden-berried form "davis gold". have both types but neither have favored me with berries of either color so far but they are still nice evergreens.
