It's my experience HERE that the older australis types get, the fewer leaves they hold. My oldest (satellite) pushing 30 yo and ca 40' keeps fewer leaves now than when it was young. However it is still evergreen. In the deep south they seem to keep most of their foliage over the winter no matter how old they are. Now having said all that, they certainly aren't nearly as dense and evergreen as grandiflora, no matter where they are growing. As far as yours going backwards, I never tried virginiana when I lived in CT, only grandiflora, so I really can't say.
