Well, I am using them mainly to keep the winter sun off the trunks to prevent winter sunscald...and maybe to some extent, keep the rabbits from gnawing on them.
But the plan is to keep the trunks cooler or at least a more even temperature and not warmer. It's the warming and cooling that causes the bark or trunk to crack.
But yes, you certainly could put these around small strap-leaf palms. Anything to keep the harsh winds off of them. If only they came in larger diameters. Some people use those swim pool noodles. Kind of too colorful though!
And I've heard of people using the black plastic large diameter drainage pipes to put around for the same purpose. Harder to cut than foam though, and more expensive, but certainly re-usable.
