well, young plants don't always start producing fruit (or flowers) showy or otherwise until they reach a certain size/maturity and until they do a potentially important diagnostic characteristic is NOT apparent. without the fruits the plant in both summer and winter could at least from a distance somewhat resemble an ash (fraxinus spp.) tree or even a sumach (rhus spp.) of some sort.
