Re: More of my temperate and tropical mixed pix.

Message from George in Bandon Oregon

think part of the reason that "temperate" and "subtropical" plants can both be grown togehter on the west coast is that most areas here have rather cool nights in the summer that allow temperate plants to survive and grow combined with the mild winters that are good for the tropicals. the s.f. bay area is a classic case of those conditions but similar climatic conditions are wide spread---sacramento and san diego (and gold beach Oregon for that matter) can grow Japanese maples and European white birches and phoenix palms in the same yard for an interesting horticultural "mash-up". heck, even at my place similar conditions allow live oaks to grow next to nordmann fir (and araucaria a stone's throw from blue spruce) and bottle brush, acacia, and eucalyptus to associate in friendly fashion with camellias, rhododendrons, and native "blueberries".
