I think it's where the sun hits the trunk in the cold winter time -- called sunscald or frost crack.
I'm adding a piece of foam insulation to my tender young trees now to hopefully prevent that. Easy to cut to fit whatever configuration your trunk has, and there's a long cut along the length of it for easy installation. Should allow ventilation and easy drainage of excess moisture. And these are really cheap! A 6-foot piece (1 inch inside diameter) is $2.00.
So I'm experimenting with this anyway. I have several Cassine hollies which are tending to crack on the trunks the last two cold winters.
