Re: Has anyone ever tried growing tectona grandis (teak tree)?

Message from George in Bandon Oregon

perhaps a ROUGH gage for it's potential hardiness is if you can grow "standard" (as opposed to the "hardy" species) citrus trees and at least have them sprout from the base after a normal winter with the minimal protection of mulching around the base----if you can't succeed with the relatively easily obtained oranges (or kumquats for that matter) you likely may NOT have good luck with teak (without engaging in significantly more winter protection). OTOH, you might try the potentially hardier MAHAGONY relatives "Chinese cedar" toona sinensis and melia azaderach ("chinaberry") or even the generally hardy magnolia macrophylla, fraseri, or tripetala for the big leaved look.
