Re: Arnold Arboretum Broadleaf Evergreens

Just some random thoughts...

The Cathaya Argyrophylla strongly reminds me of Japanese Umbrella Pine. I wonder if the two are related.

In your write-up of Cyrilla Racemiflora, I wondered if you were really serious. That a plant was versatile enough to live in Boston and South America. I looked it up in my books, and you are right. The Cyrilla genus has just one species (C. Racemiflora), and in my book, it is listed as growing from "SE US to Brazil (including West Indies)." The text goes onto say that there are two "ecotypes" (my word, not in the texts). Plants found in the SE US are listed as hardy from Zone 6 to 9. Plants from Brazil are hardy from Zone 10 to 11. So, with this genus, provenance is everything!

Does the botanical garden have any Daphniphyllum Macropodum? I'm not sure that they do well too far north of the Philly region, but thought I'd ask anyway.
