A Christmas Palm/Poem -- with appologies to Clement Moore

Message from Alex -- Atlanta z8a

Twas three weeks before Christmas, when all around the house
Not a creature was stirring, particularly my spouse.
The palm fronds I had readied for frost cloth with care,
In fear that a Zone 7 winter would finally be there.

The Pindos were nestled all snug in their mulched plant beds,
While visions of mature date palms danced in my head.
And my Queen in her covering, and my King (Sago) in his cap,
Had just settled their fronds for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon sprinkled silver on the Bismarkia still uncovered,
Thank goodness the temps just above 25 still hovered.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a truckload of palm trees, from far and from near.

When out from the truck jumped two men that were quite merry,
I knew in a moment it must be Saint Carl and Saint Gary.
They hauled from their trailer about fifteen Sabal Minor,
I then realized that no Christmas would ever be finer.

They spoke not a word, but went straight to their task,
They planted those Minors without my having to ask.
Before they took off, they asked my personal opinion,
As to the quickest route to the house of Phil Bennion.

With a hoot and a laugh, they said “we’ve ten more deliveries to go,
Y’all watch out up here cause you just might get some snow.”
I heard Carl and Gary exclaim, ere they drove out of sight,
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all palm lovers a special good-night!”
