Re: Are these Magnolia virginiana var australis???

Message from Ken TN

From personal observation here in TN and FL, australis grows as a single stem tree. In the deep south it is a tall forest canopy tree, in TN it is planted as an ornamental and is much shorter. In any case both are fully evergreen. The shrubby types seem to be deciduous, but it's possible there could be evergreen forms. Most of my shrubby types are almost bare, but I have three that are still very green, but will defoliate with colder weather. These three are from HD in Nashville, but I saw the exact plants at an HD in Columbia SC. This was in March about six years ago and the reason I bought them is because they had some green on them. I thought they probably had been overwintered in a greenhouse but I figured it was possible they could be an evergreen form. They were cheap so I got them. The shrubby forms seem to hold their leaves in response to fall temps, it's been a warm fall here so far. The combo of warm temps and a protected spot MAY be the reason those you saw are still green.
