Re: My Favorite native: California Buckeye.

Message from George in Bandon Oregon

a nice tree indeed even when bare-naked (exposing the smooth silvery bark) . it normally leafs out pretty early (feb. or earliest march here) so it can be said to both take up and put down it's leaves on a fast track compared to most other trees. the seeds are huge (bigger I think than any of the other native aesculus species) and the nectar in those showy flowers is supposed to be poisonous to the common (European) honey bee (native species are apparently immune).

FWIW, not sure if the native range of California buckey reaches all the way to Baja (though it might) AND for sure there is another buckeye species there; the rare a. parryi.
