I feel ya! But let me explain. You said, "Once the ground starts to freeze I'll protect my trachy." Why let the ground lose that much warmth in the first place? Why give winter a head start with soil temp loss?
Secondly, and most importantly, I'm not 26 or 36. I'm 56. Not that that is "old". And I don't feel old. But what that means is when faced with "easy" or "hard", you find yourself choosing "easy" almost all the time where you wouldn't when younger. In this case, I'd rather set up my protection schemes (which take hours to complete, spread over 2 or 3 days) when it's 66F outside during Thanksgiving week than later in December when it might be 45F out ON A GOOD DAY. It's tiresome work, and I'd just as soon not have to do it in uncomfortable cold.
I hope that addresses your observation. Believe me. I was once of your mindset at one time.
