Some Magnolia virginianas have been affected by the late summer drought. This is causing some early leaf drop, especially if they are grown away from their natural wetland habitat. As I posted below, Magnolia virginianas are also subject to Sooty Mold in late summer, especially when conditions are dry and the trees are stressed. Sooty mold is actually caused by aphids or scale.
