actually, the "highclere/altaclerensis" holly I have ("camellifolia") does very nicely with absolutely no summer water from yours truly (but it's in a favorable spot with deep soil, part shade, and probably some "sub-irrigation" from the septic tank leach lines, LOL). you (very) occasionally see the relatively more common form known around here as "san jose". again, other than a few Buford hollies/I. cornuta and sometimes lex crenata (nice dense shrub) hollies don't seem to be planted that much here. OTOH, English holly self sows with the help of the birds but not explosively. rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, "English laurel", photinia, pieris, viburnum (especially v. davidii), escallonia, pyrocantha, cotoneaster, abelia, etc. are much more common as evergreen shrubs than holly in more traditional landscapes.
