The Camellia is a "Spring's Promise", which appears to have japonica genes in it, judging by the foliage (and certainly C. oleifera genes for extra hardiness). This variety normally blooms "early". So seeing a "Spring's Promise" bloom now is not so unusual, but the volume of flowers this early, is. It's usually more like March that you see this many flowers.

Maybe this will be the mild winter we have been waiting for? Even if it turns "normal" in Jan / Feb, I wonder if we have had enough mild winter already to benefit some plants (i.e. those that don't like the duration of the cold more so that those only affected by extreme low temps?). Time will tell !!
