Read your post. I think I was referring to a second flush of growth, coming in late summer (like August). Swelling buds at this point are most likely a result of the unusually warm temps we are having. Hopefully, the swelling will stop before any new leaves come out because, as new growth, they probably won't be as hardy once the real cold weather gets here. Same thing for any new stem growth. But Magnolia virginiana has been around for millions of years so they can probably cope with some off-season growth.
I suspect "southern" plants are most at risk for budding out in unusually warm winter weather. Down in Florida, the australis type of Sweetbay probably grows almost all year, except for a short winter.
