Re: Machilus thunbergii etc.

Message from George in Bandon Oregon

woodlanders used to sell litsea japonica (they sold it last year) and continues to sell machilus thunbergii and several other rare lauraceae as well. forestfarm and cistus nurseries in Oregon have sold or are currently seliing litsea serecia and cinammomum japonicum. there is a wonderfully attractive machilus japonica as well but that it is even rarer. think the problem for these plants (and many many others) is as much IGNORANCE on the part of both nurseries and gardeners as disease concerns. OTOH, many of these plants if and when they can be found produce viable seed (just like camphor tree can) and this can be a source of new plants even if the nurseries don't sell them. my brothers machilus thunbergii in salem, Oregon produced a good crop of fruit (looks like large blueberries!!!) which I have planted in the hope of getting some more seedlings this coming spring.
