I grew up on Long Island. It can get hot, but there summers aren't consistently hot like in the south. Their summers are also quite short. Really late June-early September.
The Island usually gets less snow than other places at the same latitude. That being said, Nor'easters and blizzards sometimes will drop 20+ inches of snow every few years. You're probably right that it must drop branches when it snows. Regular White Pines also tend to drop branches in snow storms and they are probably the most commonly planted coniferous tree in the NYC area.
